Problem Definition
This project will be to build a free photo restore website where users can upload their photos and choose to modify the photo in 2 ways:
- Colourise their photo. If their photo is in B&W or if the colours in the photo are faded. A user can provide their photo as input and the website will add colour to the photo to bring it to life
- Improve photo resolution. If a user’s photo is low resolution, they can provide their photo as input and the website will increase output the same photo in a higher resolution.
This project will focus on gaining user feedback and iterating over the end product to continuously improve its performance, usability and reliability.
What this project is not

⭐
These could be added as future enhancements down the line if it suits
</aside>
- An opportunity for monetisation or to turn into a business
- A catch all for any type of generative photo modification (ie. this project will not include removing scratches, defiltering photos or editing photo contents)
- A tool for users to process batches of photos at once. The project will look at take only 1 photo as input and will output 1 photo.
- A tool that is scalable for millions of users. Currently, the project aims to provide a fast & performant photo for upto 1000 users
Optimising for User Feedback
The main opportunity for maximising user feedback is in the UI design. This could be done in the following ways (each increasing in time required for the user):
- Thumbs up and thumbs down button after output has been displayed. The same could be added to the UI before use of the website to get feedback on the layout
- Having a ‘Share to Snap’ and download buttons. The CTR on these buttons could indirectly indicate positive feelings about the project. However, this may be noisy due to accidental clicks or users sharing how bad the output is as a joke.
- Adding a comments box that appears when output is displayed or after the user presses 👍🏽 or 👎🏽 to get more information.
Insights on written feedback (app store & mobile apps):
- 18% of users (aged 25+) give written feedback (this data was self declared and can be found here). Of those, 31% only gave a written review when prompted
- Out of the 18%, 83% discussed shortcomings and 91% provided praise for the application
